The Deceit of "The Golden Compass"

I have received email alert after email alert regarding this movie, due to be released December 7, 2007 (Pearl Harbor Day).

Like most of us who grew up as part of the baby boom, we were enthralled with books such as the Lord of the Rings series and the Chronicles of Narnia. They all had a great message of belief in forces outside of ourselves, perseverance, good suppressing/overcoming evil, and, underlying all of those messages, the greatness of God. Whether we were Christian or Jewish, God and His Goodness/Righteousness overcame evil. Simpler times, yes, but is it any wonder those stories, so many decades later, are still read, made into incredible movies, and loved by all ages?

I never heard of Phillip Pullman until I began receiving these email alerts. So far, I've heard from friends, the Catholic League, One News Now and America Family Alert. One of my friends provided a Snopes link as well.

The movie is based upon the first book (Northern Lights, released in the US as the Golden Compass) in a trilogy titled His Dark Materials.

Per Snopes here,

"...the series follows a streetwise girl who travels through multiple worlds populated by witches, armor plated bears and ecclesiastical warriors to defeat the oppressive forces of a senile God."

Well.

Let me clarify right here, before anyone gets their panties in a wad, I have nothing against a great fantasy or fantasy series. I have read--repeatedly--every single Harry Potter book out there, and each and every one of them--particularly after I found out a lot of the underlying Christian symbolism J.K. Rowling used in her writings (Townhall article detailing symbolism used can be found here) to bring about Harry's adventures--was fantastic.

No, this is not a hit piece on the world of fantasy books, not by a long shot. This is a piece on an insidious evil purposely meant to indoctrinate our children and grandchildren (under the guise of fantasy and adventure and riding the coattails of the Harry Potter phenom) into the joys of secularism, atheism and agnosticism--often without parents and grandparents being aware of those underlying messages.

What I have learned regarding Phillip Pullman and the underlying message of this series of books is alarming and enraging. It shows just how far the secularists will go to indoctrinate our children into the atheist agenda while covering it up as "entertainment" to be released for the holidays.

That's enough from Snopes. You should have a rudimentary idea at this point if this is something you want your children/grandchildren exposed to in either book or film form.

PHILIP PULLMAN’S DECEIT IS APPALLING

On this morning’s “Today” show, English atheist Philip Pullman was questioned by Al Roker about his trilogy, His Dark Materials, and the movie which opens December 7 that is based on his first book, The Golden Compass. Roker mentioned that the Catholic League is charging that Pullman’s work is selling “atheism for kids.” Here is Pullman’s response:

“Well, you know I always mistrust people who tell us how we should understand something. They know better than we do what the book means or what this means and how we should read it and whether we should read it or not. I don’t think that’s democratic. I prefer to trust the reader. I prefer to trust what I call the democracy of reading. When everybody has the right to form their own opinion and read what they like and come to their own conclusion about it. So I trust the reader.” [Emphasis mine--note his 180 turn from what he told the Sydney Morning Herald]

Catholic League president Bill Donohue replied as follows:

“The last thing Pullman trusts is the people. That is why he tries to sneak his atheism in back-door to kids. If he had any courage, he’d defend his work, but instead he continues to do what he does best—practice deceit. This is the same man who boldly exclaimed a few years ago, ‘I’m trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief.’ Now he says that it is undemocratic of us to issue a consumer’s alert (we’ve published a booklet on his work) that exposes his hatred of all things Catholic.

“We at the Catholic League never had to run from our work. How pitiful it is to see a grown man slip kids his poisonous pill and then pretend he trusts the reader. We are so happy to have ripped the mask off his face. And the movie doesn’t even open for another five weeks! This is going to be a good ride. Hope Pullman is up to it.”

SCHOLASTIC PRESSED ON “THE GOLDEN
COMPASS”; NO MORE VENTURES WITH PULLMAN SOUGHT

Catholic League president Bill Donohue wrote the following letter to Scholastic Corporation CEO Richard Robinson; copies of the letter were also sent to all the bishops and school superintendents in the Catholic community. Here is the body of Donohue’s letter to Robinson:

As someone who spent 20 years in education, I am aware of Scholastic’s stellar reputation. This is all the more reason why I am profoundly disturbed by Scholastic’s role in co-producing “The Golden Compass.” It is not the movie, per se, that is the problem, it is the book—and the other volumes that comprise His Dark Materials—that is the issue.

The author of these books, Philip Pullman, does not disguise his hatred of Christianity, especially the Roman Catholic Church. Why, then, would Scholastic be associated with such bigotry? As pointed out in our booklet on “The Golden Compass,” producing such a movie would seem to violate Scholastic’s own Credo, one part of which says, “To help build a society free of prejudice and hate, and dedicated to the highest quality of life in community and nation.” Moreover, Scholastic professes a belief in “High moral and spiritual values,” something which surely sounds odd given the Pullman connection. [Emphasis mine]

Christians need to be convinced that Scholastic will never again work with militant atheists who have an animus against their religion. Catholics, in particular, want to be certain that purchasing Scholastic materials does not indirectly fund campaigns against them. To this end, we look for Scholastic to pledge that in the event a movie version of Pullman’s other two books, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass, is launched, it will have nothing to do with them. This would reassure Christians that the “Golden Compass” venture was an anomaly.

The Golden Compass is a film from New Line Cinema based on the first book of a series, His Dark Materials, written by English atheist Philip Pullman. It is set to release December 7 in theaters nationwide. From watching the trailer, it's easy to see that the film has a C. S. Lewis/Narnia feel to it, but don't be deceived.

Pullman's book trilogy is the story of "a battle against the church and a fight to overthrow God," BBC News reported. The Guardian, a British newspaper, goes even further to describe the books as "metaphysical fantasies encompassing parallel worlds, the death of God and the fall of man ....

The bottom line is this movie promotes, heavily, an agenda. It covers up the agenda by promoting a movie done in the style of Narnia; New Line Cinema plans to release this movie just in time for the holidays, when people are planning on spending time with their families.

The season, though, is not a season for atheism. The season is Christmas, the birth of our Lord, our Salvation, into this world. It's a time for families, closeness, celebration, giving, love--timeless values.

Do you really want to line this man's pockets? Not just this man, but all who are helping him promote his agenda? New Line Cinema, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, Eva Green and the rest of the cast? They knew what they were making and promoting. Do you want to help hollyweird continue with their anti-family, anti-America agenda by making these people even more wealthy?

There used to be a time when no self-respecting star or studio would make a movie even hinting at such values. Any studio or star that did so became instant box office poison. Trouble is, there's no such thing as box office poison anymore. Hollywood truly has no morals, no values--anything goes. And the public continues to eat it up as if it were the finest delicacy. Then these same people turn around and bemoan the lack of values in today's society.


Look what's being promoted as normal, progressive and "ok".


The question is--IS it normal and ok? Or is it further proof of the degeneration of our society from within, the cancer eating this country alive in its metastization?


When we think nothing of presidential candidates who participate in scandal after scandal in fundraising, who sweep their wrongdoing under the rug, who can't answer simple questions without prevaricating constantly, who can't make decisions, who commit treason against a sitting President (dissent is one thing, legitimate questions regarding policy are okay, too--constant treason is another)...

When we reward bad behavior and choices with constant media attention...

When we accept as normal aberrant sexual practices...

When we kick God out of our schools and public places...

When our government rapes the populace and commits armed robbery upon the populace in the form of continuous taxes to reward the lazy, punishing the productive...

When murderers are appeased and catered to...

When we refuse to enforce laws on the books regarding immigration--then whine we need the workers (after a generation long murder spree of the unborn)...

When killing those we deem "unworthy" of life simply because they are not yet born or are too old to be of use...

When flushing a koran is considered an abomination but creating "art" by thrusting a crucifix in urine or creating a statue of the Virgin Mary out of elephant dung is considered art to be admired...

When we have a climate that condones all of the above, what do we expect? We have no one to blame but ourselves and our own slide down that greased slippery slope embarked upon when people decided Madeline Murray O'Hare was the one to follow.

Now--what are we going to do about it? I won't be giving my money to New Line Cinema or the cast members of this film--preferably as often as I find a movie released by New Line or one of these stars. I am but one person--my money won't be missed as an individual. But how many individuals can make a difference--together?

I can't tell you how to spend your money. I can ask you to think long and hard about how you DO spend your money. You earn it--spend it wisely.

Flight 93 Memorial--UPDATE

Last week, we brought you an ACTION ALERT regarding the planned Flight 93 Memorial and its blatant appeasement to the people who killed over 3,000 people September 11, 2001. What's the controversy? The memorial is planned as an islamic crescent of embrace, with the main feature facing toward Mecca. After sending out the emails to the appropriate people, we received the following responses:

Thank you for sharing your concerns with me about the design of the
Flight 93 National Memorial.  You can be assured that the National Park
Service (NPS) is committed to a national memorial that conveys the full honor
due to the heroes of Flight 93, building the memorial, and continuing to
commemorate those heroes who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

This response has two parts. The first part describes the process used
to select the memorial design, the people and groups involved in the
decision-making, and the steps the National Park Service took when concerns
were first raised about the design. The second part is an attachment, a
letter sent on November 9, 2007 to Congressman Tancredo from the Families
of Flight 93. The group seeks to honor their loved ones--the people  lost
on the flight--and their letter describes their pain and the view that
blogger Alec Rawls presents "preposterous opinions that the designer and
design are Muslim or Islamist conspirators who seek to memorialize
murderers.  Nothing could be more offensive to the Families whose loved
ones died so that folks like Mr. Rawls can be free to expel such hurtful
and unsubstantiated accusations."


The National Park Service is aware of concerns about the memorial design
and took steps last year to investigate the issue. In doing so, the NPS
consulted with university and religious scholars, all of whom concluded
that the memorial design does not imply or depict religious iconography. In
light of those findings, the National Park Service and all three of its
partner organizations continue to support the final design for the Flight
93 memorial.


It may be helpful to understand the partners and the design selection
process. Four organizations partnered to organize and implement the process
for choosing a memorial design. The Families of Flight 93 is a nonprofit
organization of family members of the passengers and crew who died on the
flight. The Flight 93 Advisory Commission was created by Congress to
prepare a report containing recommendations for the planning, design,
construction, and long-term management of a permanent memorial at the crash
site. The Flight 93 Memorial Task Force serves as the Commission's
operational arm and includes Flight 93 family members, community members,
first responders, educators, and other local, regional, and national
stakeholders. The National Park Service is the federal agency charged with
administering Flight 93 National Memorial.


These four partner organizations agreed that an open design competition
would be the most inclusive, transparent, and democratic way to explore a
range of designs for the memorial. The competition was open to design
professionals, as well as to the public, and was conducted in two stages
with two separate juries. The stage I jury analyzed approximately 1,000
submissions and forwarded five finalist designs to the stage II jury. The
five finalist designs were exhibited for public comment in Somerset,
Pennsylvania, and on the project website. The stage II jury, which was
composed of noted design professionals, Flight 93 family members, and
community leaders, reviewed the public comments and evaluated the designs
against the memorial's mission statement. By a majority, the stage II jury
voted in favor of Mr. Murdoch's design and then, to reinforce their support
of the design, took a second, unanimous vote to support the design created
by Mr. Murdoch.


After the winning design was announced, the NPS received some inquiries
from the public about what they perceived as Islamic symbolism in the
memorial design. While the architect, Mr. Murdoch, had not intended any
such symbolism in the design, he nonetheless refined aspects of the design
in response to the perceptions.


The most prominent refinement was in the treatment of the naturally
occurring bowl-shaped landscape feature. The design now surrounds that area
with a circle of trees which is broken in two places--the location which
marks the flight path as it breaks the circular continuity of the bowl
edge, and the Sacred Ground where the crash occurred. The locations of the
two breaks in the circle are based on the flight path and crash site of
Flight 93.

It is with deep regret that the Families of Flight 93 recently learned of your letter to NPS Director Mary Bomar that has been posted on several websites. Especially unfortunate was to see your unquestioned support of the conspiracy theorist, Alec Rawls. Mr. Rawls continues to disseminate misinformation, twist facts, and incite emotional furor over the Flight 93 Memorial design based on supposed patriotic grounds. Mr. Rawls has perpetrated a complete fabrication that the memorial design represents an Islamic crescent, and he has distorted drawings and orientation of the memorial to suit his most unpatriotic and self-serving purposes.

Former NPS Director Mainella reported to you in October 2005 that changes to the design would be made. Indeed, the perceived crescent shape was shortly thereafter extended more completely into a circle to alleviate any further misinterpretation of the site plan graphic. The circle, a symbol of unity, is symbolically broken in two places – where the flight path of the plane entered the “bowl” topography, and at the crash site itself. The entire design is referred to as “The Flight 93 National Memorial.” Unfortunately, Mr. Rawls refuses to acknowledge these design alterations have been made. Instead, undaunted by the rational efforts of others to discuss these points with Mr. Rawls, he continues to focus his vehemence in various public media on the original crescent shape and to expound his equally preposterous opinions that the designer and design are Muslim or Islamist conspirators who seek to memorialize murderers. Nothing could be more offensive to the Families whose loved ones died so that folks like Mr. Rawls can be free to expel such hurtful and unsubstantiated accusations.

The Families of Flight 93 overwhelmingly support the design and the design process, and reaffirmed that support by a unanimous vote of the Board of Directors as recently as two months ago. Oddly, when Mr. Gordon Felt, Treasurer, Families of Flight 93 last spoke to you in October 2005, you had indicated that you would support the design as long as the Families were satisfied. We are so satisfied, and have repeatedly and steadfastly said so, and so we are puzzled by your new found trust of a self-serving conspiracy blogger who does not represent the opinions or interest of the Families in any way. Indeed, quite the opposite, as Mr. Rawls, in our opinion, undermines the integrity and honor of our loved ones who died on Flight 93. We are also disappointed that neither you, nor your staff, have sought to establish what our position is with regard to this matter. The previous trust we placed in your word to one of our officers is now in doubt, as we have not been afforded the opportunity to learn of your changed position except through the blog Mr. Rawls’ offers.

We do, however, continue to value your opinion, as we do for all regardless of whether they disagree with our support of the Memorial, or not. We also want to have your support, and so we extend to you our open-ended offer to have you visit the site at your earliest opportunity, talk with Families’ representatives while there, and learn of how this elegant, but simple, design fits the terrain and meets the stated design competition expectations, as well as those of the Families and our partners..

Additionally, enclosed for your use and further information is a “White Paper” prepared by the project partners that documents the tremendously open and inclusive process by which the design was selected, the background of Alec Rawls’ interference, the many opportunities and courtesies given to Mr. Rawls by the project partners to address his concerns, and his unwelcome overtures and veiled threats to the Families and the project, as well as a chart that counters Mr. Rawls’ claims with the hard facts. Also enclosed is a letter sent by Flight 93 Advisory Commission Chairman John J. Reynolds to Mr. Rawls, requesting that he stop his persistent harassment, intimidation, and slander of the project partners.

We hope you find these documents useful, and we thank you in advance for your continued support of the Families of Flight 93 organization in our quest to build this memorial and honor the actions and the memories of our lost loved ones.

Now, I don't know about you, nor do I know if you were consulted about this design. Everybody I know--those whom I informed of this and brought this to their attention--were frankly OUTRAGED at the religious iconography they blatantly deny. The only change made by the designer was to add a bunch of trees--the placement of the trees is the star area.

Do we really want our murdered men and women honored with a memorial honoring their murderers? I don't think so. I certainly don't. To continue to push this design is just like lighting the Empire State Building up in green to honor Eid--to honor the islamic murderers and appease them at the end of the month of ramadan.

It's time to say enough is enough--our tax dollars are being used to appease these monsters with special footbaths, prayer rooms and cafeterias at our federally funded colleges; we have taxi drivers in Minnesota refusing to accomodate Americans because of THEIR religion--and it's okay; Minnesota's congressman Keith Ellison works hand in hand with the terrorist front group CAIR and has made statements he will do all he can to force islam on America; our children are being indoctrinated into the religion of hate in school; Christmas is spat upon but there's no end to appeasing islamics. Separation of church and state should go for ALL faiths, not just Judeo Christian. I refuse to allow my children to be taught and indoctrinated into the islamic hate.

And this memorial? It's not a memorial to the men and women murdered on Flight 93--it's a memorial to the murderers of those men and women, a memorial to the ones who murdered Americans without regard to age, gender or reason--not to the Americans who saved the Pentagon by taking the plane down when they realized what was happening.

And these planners think we're completely blind and stupid, that we can't see the crescent of embrace in the design, even to the color.

Are you going to let them continue to do this? Are you going to sit idly by while these planners force the religious iconography glorifying the murderers of Flight 93 down your throats? Are you going to continue to allow this political correctness garbage continue to infect this country?

Why are Barna and Hanley stubbornly set upon honoring the murderers rather than the murdered American heroes? That's the real question--and I say follow the money.

PBS Telling Teachers to Violate First Amendment?
Airing on PBS tonight at 8 p.m. is "Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial", a two hour documentary that tells the story of the Dover case. The ACLU are super-excited!

I won't know how objective the documetary itself is until I watch it, however a recent move by PBS has one group up in arms:

A packet for educators issued by the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) in conjunction with the NOVA program "Judgment Day: Intelligent Design on Trial" encourages teaching practices that are probably unconstitutional, a conservative organization stated on Tuesday.

"The NOVA/PBS teaching guide encourages the injection of religion into classroom teaching about evolution in a way that likely would violate current Supreme Court precedents about the First Amendment's Establishment Clause," said John West, vice president for public policy and legal affairs at the Discovery Institute, in a news release.

The 22-page document is a companion piece to the two-hour NOVA docudrama, "Judgment Day," airing on most network affiliates Tuesday night. The film is about a trial concerning intelligent design that took place in Dover, Pa., in 2005.

The guide claims to provide teachers with "easily digestible information to guide and support you in facing challenges to evolution."

In the booklet, teachers are instructed to use such discussion questions as: "Can you accept evolution and still believe in religion?" The answer to that query is provided as: "Yes. The common view that evolution is inherently antirelig

ious is simply false."

In a meeting with Pentagon reporters today, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said all components met or exceeded their recruiting goals for October.

On the active-duty side, the Army made 101 percent of its goal of 4,500, with 4,564 recruits. The Navy made 100 percent of its goal of 2,788 recruits. The Marine Corps made 102 percent of its goal of 2,720, with 2,788 enlisting. The Air Force made 100 percent of its goal of 2,656.

Meet Marsha Weinerman, a city official from Cambridge, Massachusetts.

She's made news recently because she decided to shut down the Boy Scouts care package collection boxes. You see, the Boy Scouts were sending care packages for our troops to enjoy at the holidays. But Marsha Weinerman said the Boy Scouts actions are 'too pro-war' and ordered law enforcement to remove the care package collection boxes.

The Boy Scout's troop leader is outraged:

"We have never seen anything like this decision in Cambridge before,” Patterson wrote. The city is changing for the worse if decisions like this are allowed to be made."
